reality check or do i just need to push myself harder?

was just looking on the mcmillan pace calculator at what my 5 and 10k times translate to in a 1/2 marathon.

my 5k time (26m21s) would predict a 2h01m48s half marathon - but it would also predict a 54.44 10k which i have never done.

my 10k time (55m50) would predict a 2hr04m14s half.

so - i am just wondering whether this means that realistically i should downgrade my expectation (and the pace that we go out at etc etc) or whether i should just concentrate on believing that 2 hours is realistic? i don't know.........

i don't want to set my sights on a time that i am never going to be able to reach and will be disappointed if i don't make - but then again i don't want to give myself an excuse to not push myself.

anyways - just thinking out loud...

Have you asked Coach Sean what you should aim for? That might take the pressure off ... then again he might say sub 1:55!

Don't forget that your 5kms time is now 2 months old & you've done a lot of work since then. Your 10kms time was also set at North Head which is a tough course

Have a chat to Sean but don't doubt yourself. I believe in you.

push, push, push, push, push :)

You're capable of a <2hour ellie, and the adrenaline and atmosphere of the big race will play a big part.

Hey, no harm in trying - and besides which, you have a lot of half marathons left in you. And what doesn't kill you, yadda, yadda ;)

assume that you're fitter now than when you ran those times and put your balls (or norgs) on the line and go for the sub 2!

The 10k time is old. The pacer will keep you going for the 2hrs and then you push across circular quay to get under the time. Easy! You will do it.

Just settle into the pace and concentrate on rhythm Ellie. Belinda is going to go for it as well. The challenge is to hang on to the pace as fatigue sets in. At least there will be plenty of company and encouragement along the way.

You can do it Ellie, it's a great goal to aim for, a nice challenge. We can't always beat our goal, but setting a challenge will make it all the better when you beat it!

I think you can do it! I have seen you improving at training and those times are a few months old! I think that having Nat to encourage you when you get tired and want to slow will help! I say Go for it!!! The worst that happens is you do not get your time, but believe me it is much less annoying knowing you put in a 100% than finish with energy left to burn!

Don't downgrade your expectation Ellie - put your work into not being disappointed if you dont fulfill it - better to aim high and fall short than aim low and know you could've done better.

In an archery competition 100% of the shots not taken dont go in! (old Taoist saying).

Hey don't worry too much about it. After a couple of years of running my North Head 10k time from last week has finally balanced out all my other times according to the calculator. Just enjoy the run and rely on all the solid training you have done, and I am sure you will go sub 2hrs.

My first Half Marra and the goal was just to complete it. I reckon you could be capable of a sub 2 hour race. Go for it!

This may say more about me than I want to admit, but I always set two goal times; the time I'll be ecstatic if I beat, and the time that I'll be unhappy if I can't beat. If I land between them, I'm happy (in management terms, the achievable goal and the stretch goal).

On the basis of your times (and their age and your training), 2 hours is a great stretch goal for you. You can do it, but it isn't guaranteed, and it won't be easy. Go for it, and when you get tired, keep going for it. That's exciting!

p.s. ...but *don't* be devastated if you miss it... :-)

I think the others have said some sensible things and I don't think aiming for a sub-2 run is unrealistic. I like Horrie's comments about settling into a pace and concentrating on rhythm. Very wise, and the path to PBs.

Sean will be able to advise you Ellie.

In my opinion, 2 hour pace will not be disasterous (i.e. you won't grind to a stop), as long as you run at an even 2 hour pace right from the gun (5:41 per km give or take a bit). If you run 5:20ks early you'll be in trouble.
