swimming and cycling (and some socialising in the middle :)
Wednesday PM: Swim Squad
A pretty good session that I warmed into although I thought at first that it was going to be really rough. turns out with swimming that i pick up after about 500m. Or relax or something. The session looked like this:
-100m warm up
- 6 x 50 free then 2 x 50 kick only
- repeat
- the main set: 10 x 150's - building (50 easy, 50 med, 50 hard).
- cool down 200m
out of that I missed 2 x 50 in the first set and then in the main set I only got up to 8 x 150. So all up 2200m for me. All with flippers. Got some interesting feedback - I roll too much in the water and need to twist in the shoulders not all down through my hips (which is the opposite to what the book said but hey - these guys are the pros!)
Thursday AM: Ride with bondifit squad
Found out yesterday that as of next week this will be a girls only session. Is aimed at beginners but 5 people showed up (1 boy.. seems rough that his session gets cut!) and i was far and away the most beginner-y. (3rd time with clip in shoes!!).
So they were doing 3 laps warm up and then hill things. I was told just to ride. All up I did 22.5 or so k's in nearly an hour. It was hard. I don't understand the gears and i think i am doing it wrong. but maybe its also just hard for me. :)
Other stuff...
I have decided that Thursday evening track (not with sweat, with the other mob) is going to be an optional 'see how i go' session. i find the 2 x a day thing quite hard. I want to do it, but yesterday after swimming i walked to the rocks to join the crew (jen, owly, blkbox, beki, dj and portrunr - guest of honour!) for dinner and i was a bit zombie-esque. sorry if i wasn't being particularly witty and entertaining (more like a grouchy cow) - i was tired. still am! but i am feeling better about everything. i'll get there - one day!
have also been eating really well for 2 whole days now so i feel good about that too.
EDIT - just spoke with the doctors surgery about my blood test. apparently i have to go in and talk to the doctor about it :( i managed to drag out of the receptionist that she wants to talk about my cholesterol (apparently high - which shits me because i just had a 'heart health check' which said it was fine!!! but not all that surprising as lots of my family have high cholesterol despite being very healthy/active hmmm), also wants to talk about my iron levels being (and i quote) 'unusual' (what the???) and also about my protein. hmm. made an appointment monday... but don't realllllly want to go.....
EDIT EDIT - have decided against track session this week. i am actually feeling ok - but realised that i lost my goggles and have swimming tomorrow AM so will have to replace them!! darn... looks like a trip to rebel is on the cards :) need some new shoes also actually... hmmm... better start warming the credit card up now.

who was a grouchy cow? See previous comments about "drama queen" and insert "grumpy cow".
Great to see you. I'm only disapointed I didn't have the energy to get off my ass and visit you down the other end of the table. I regret yelling some comments across then table at you!
We all saw you out riding this morning Ellie as we were doing our wild wally's. You were looking good. Training twice a day sounds really tough, good luck with it all.
good swim set - 150m's are HARD - so don't feel worried about dropping out of a couple of sets. I usually also sit out 1 or 2 when doing 150m reps.
As for the gearing with the bike, the best clue is to leave the chain in the small ring at the front virtually ALL the time. (you have 2 rings on the front where your cranks are - a big one on the outside and an inner smaller one - leave it in that one). You then only need to change gearings on the back cluster between about 4-5 of the middle ones. Don't go too far to the really small ones on the outside or you'll hear a grinding noise - if you look down when you do this, you'll notice the chain is then running on an angle when you do that and grinds against the front derailler (this is called "cross-chaining" and is a no-no - will wear out your chain & derailler).
If you find you are going too fast (like down a hill) for the gears that you have, don't be tempted to change up into the big ring for at least a month or two. If you're going too fast to keep pedalling, then STOP pedalling and just coast.
Junior riders are physically MADE to keep the chain in the small ring until they're 15 or so during competiitons (they have a limiter attached to the bike to prevent changing up). The same principle should apply to all people starting out too :)
Twice a day is tough Ellie but as long as you don't over-do it your body should adjust - the trick is in the timing of the strategic rest day. Don't become too much of a slave to a schedule - trust your instincts a bit.
Yeah, I was going to say what Miners said about the bike gears... Not!!
Off you go to the drs now and find out what they're on about. Better to know and do something about these 'unusual' results. Iron is really important for us gals and if you are a bit deficient that would explain your recent tiredness.
yeah, I'm a bit slow with my comments...lol...you were understandably a bit tired but certainly not grouchy!! Lovely to see you again :)
